Platelet Rich FIBRIN

Platelet-rich fibrin (PRF) is a leukocyte- and platelet-rich fibrin biomaterial that acts as a binding site for both platelets and growth factors. Through increasing the local concentration of growth factors at specific tissues, PRF promotes tissue regeneration.

Why All The Excitement About PRF?

PRF permits the body to take advantage of the normal healing pathways at a greatly accelerated rate. During the healing process, the body rushes many cells and cell-types to the wound in order to initiate the healing process. One of those cell types is platelets. Platelets perform many functions, including formation of a blood clot and release of growth factors (GF) into the wound. These growth factors; platelet derived growth factors (PDGF), transforming growth factor beta (TGF), and insulin-like growth factor (ILGF), function to assist the body in repairing itself by stimulating stem cells to regenerate new tissue. The more growth factors released and sequestered into the wound, the more stem cells are stimulated to produce new tissue. Thus, PRP permits the body to heal faster and more efficiently.

A subfamily of TGF, is bone morphogenic protein (BMP). BMP has been shown to induce the formation of new bone in research studies in both animals and humans. This is of great significance to the surgeon who places dental implants. By adding PRF, and BMP, to the implant site with bone substitute particles, the implant surgeon can now grow bone more predictably and faster than ever before.

PRF Has Many Clinical Applications

Platelet-Rich Fibrin (PRF) Therapy – Natural Healing & Regeneration in Oral Surgery and Facial Aesthetics

At Center City Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery, we utilize Platelet-Rich Fibrin (PRF) to accelerate healing, reduce inflammation, and promote natural tissue regeneration. PRF is a cutting-edge, all-natural therapy derived from your own blood, making it an excellent option for oral surgery, skin rejuvenation, and hair restoration.

PRF is an advanced form of platelet-rich plasma (PRP) that contains higher concentrations of platelets, growth factors, white blood cells, and a fibrin matrix for prolonged healing effects. Unlike traditional PRP, PRF is 100% natural, with no additives or anticoagulants, making it ideal for both oral surgery and facial aesthetics.

PRF in Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery

PRF plays a critical role in oral surgery and implant dentistry by significantly improving healing and reducing complications.

How PRF Benefits Oral Surgery Patients

✔ Faster Healing – PRF accelerates tissue regeneration and wound healing.

✔ Reduced Pain & Swelling – Natural anti-inflammatory properties minimize discomfort.

✔ Lower Risk of Dry Socket & Infection – PRF protects extraction sites and surgical wounds.

✔ Enhanced Bone & Soft Tissue Regeneration – Ideal for dental implants and bone grafting.

Common PRF Applications in Oral Surgery

Tooth Extractions & Wisdom Teeth Removal: PRF promotes faster soft tissue healing and reduces post-extraction discomfort.

Dental Implants: Enhances osseointegration (bone fusion) and strengthens surrounding soft tissue.

Bone Grafting & Ridge Augmentation: PRF aids in faster bone regeneration for implant placement.

Gum Recession & Periodontal Surgery: PRF supports soft tissue healing and regeneration in gum grafting procedures.

Sinus Lifts: Improves bone healing in preparation for upper jaw implants.

PRF for Facial Aesthetics

Beyond oral surgery, PRF is an all-natural alternative to fillers and a powerful skin rejuvenation treatment.

How PRF Works in Facial Aesthetics

1. Blood Draw – A small sample is taken, similar to a routine blood test.

2. Centrifugation – The blood is spun at a low speed to separate the PRF layer, preserving key healing components.

3. Application – PRF is injected or applied to the skin, under the eyes, or in the scalp for hair restoration.

Aesthetic Benefits of PRF

✔ Skin Rejuvenation – Reduces fine lines, wrinkles, and acne scars while improving skin texture.

✔ Under-Eye Rejuvenation – Naturally brightens dark circles and restores volume.

✔ Hair Restoration – Stimulates dormant hair follicles for thicker, healthier hair growth.

✔ Post-Treatment Healing – Accelerates recovery after Morpheus8, Fotona, and Lumecca IPL treatments.

PRF vs. PRP: What’s the Difference?

Feature:                                                  PRP (Platelet-Rich Plasma)                                        PRF (Platelet-Rich Fibrin)

Centrifuge Speed:                                           High-speed spin                                                                 Low-speed spin

Additives:                                            Often contains anticoagulants                              100% natural, no additives

Growth Factor Release:                                 Short-term effect (hours)                         Long-term effect (weeks to months if heated)

Fibrin Matrix                                                       Not present                                             Creates a fibrin scaffold for prolonged release

Healing Potential                                                           Moderate                                               Higher, due to sustained growth factor release

Who Can Benefit from PRF?

PRF is safe and effective for individuals looking to:

  • Heal faster after oral surgery or dental implant procedures
  • Improve bone and soft tissue regeneration for implants or grafting
  • Enhance skin texture, tone, and overall appearance naturally
  • Stimulate hair growth for thinning or receding hairlines
  • Reduce dark circles, under-eye hollows, and signs of aging

Combining PRF with Other Treatments

PRF can be used in combination with oral surgery procedures and aesthetic treatments for even better results:

  •  Morpheus8: PRF enhances collagen stimulation and speeds healing after microneedling.
  • Lumecca IPL: PRF minimizes redness and supports post-IPL skin healing.
  • Dental Implants & Bone Grafting: PRF promotes stronger, faster bone and soft tissue regeneration.
  • Tooth Extractions: PRF reduces the risk of dry socket and enhances healing.

What to Expect from a PRF Treatment

  •  Minimally invasive with no downtime
  • 100% natural healing and rejuvenation
  • Visible results in 4-6 weeks, improving over time
  • Multiple sessions may be recommended for optimal results

PRP Also Has Many Advantages

Safety: PRF is a by-product of the patient’s own blood, therefore, disease transmission is not an issue.

Convenience: PRF can be generated in the doctor’s office while the patient is undergoing an outpatient surgical procedure such as the placement of dental implants, or facial rejuvenation treatment such as microneedling.

Faster healing: The supersaturation of the wound with PRF, and thus growth factors, produces an increase of tissue synthesis and faster tissue regeneration.

Frequently Asked Questions About PRP

Is PRF safe? Yes. During the outpatient visit, a small amount of your own blood is drawn out via the IV. This blood is then placed in the PRF centrifuge machine and spun down. In less than 15 minutes, the PRP is formed and ready to use.

Should PRF be used in all bone-grafting cases? Not always. In some cases, there is no need for PRF. However, in the majority of cases, application of PRF to the graft will increase the final amount of bone present, in addition to making the wound heal faster and more efficiently.

Will my insurance cover the costs? Unfortunately not. The cost of the PRF application is paid by the patient.

Are there any contraindications to PRF? Very few. Obviously, patients with bleeding disorders or hematologic diseases do not qualify for this in-office procedure. Check with your surgeon and/or primary care physician to determine if PRP is right for you.
